Things I Miss Fridays

February 27, 2009

There are always several moments in a week where I think about things I miss and I always have a little extra peace and quiet on Fridays so I’ve decided to start something called “Things I Miss Fridays”.

We will start off with something I miss probably more than any other piece of entertainment ever: My So-Called Life.

my_so_called_life_003What girl between 12-25 didn’t want to be Angela Chase?  And who wasn’t totally in love with Jordan Catalano?  And who didn’t wish they had a Brian Krakow that was so infatuated with her?  And who isn’t sad now to see Delia starring in Best Buy commercials?

I have the whole series (well, all 19 episodes of it) on DVD, along with a commemorative lunchbox.  I don’t watch the DVDs often because it’s pretty much like stepping into a mental time machine.  I feel 20 again – I want to put on my Doc Martens (which I still have) and a plaid flannel shirt (which, sadly, I no longer have) and listen to REM, Morrissey, and The Cure while writing poetry and believing that no one will ever understand me (this is still possibly true).  The show was a wealth of fantastic writing and acting – endlessly quote-worthy:

“Sometimes it seems like we’re all living in some kind of prison. And the crime is how much we hate ourselves. It’s good to get really dressed up once in a while and admit the truth: that when you really look closely? People are so strange and so complicated that they’re actually… beautiful. Possibly even me.”

Something else I miss quite a lot is Golden Grahams, the ORIGINAL formula.

ggDid you even notice that they changed the formula?  I don’t recall exactly when I noticed (it was quite some years ago) but all of a sudden, they didn’t taste the same anymore.  They were lighter in color, more uniform in shape, and kind of shiny.  If I had to guess, I’d say something about high fructose corn syrup but that is 100% conjecture – I really have no clue what they changed (and have never bothered to research it).  But growing up, this was my favorite cereal and I even loved the commercials because they featured The Turtle’s “Happy Together” – which, to this day, I call “The Golden Grahams song”.  I love that song so much, in fact, that it was the last dance song at my wedding and is the last song on my wedding highlight video (which I will figure out how to post on here some day).

I don’t eat cereal very often because after gastric bypass, you don’t have such a great tolerance for milk.  However, I do like to put a little bit of cereal into my yogurt or sometimes eat it dry for a snack.  Golden Grahams isn’t what it used to be, but I have to admit I still indulge once in a while.

Wow I haven’t seen that show in years. We should really get together and watch it!

I completely agree! I miss My So-Called Life as well. I felt like I *was* Angela Chase. We even had the same hair at one point! They put some episodes online recently but then I was left hanging when they seemed to just stop in the middle. Re-watching it was interesting. Still as great, but wow. Jordan Catalano. Totally not as cool as I remember thinking he was. I did freak myself out a little when I actually related to the parents in one scene… Ick!

“Sometimes someone says something really small and it just fits into this empty place in your heart.” Angela Chase
